Competitive Analysis of Fitness and Wellness Apps for Wellen

Project Overview:

Project Summary:

During my UI/UX design internship at Wellen, I conducted a competitive analysis of fitness and wellness platforms to identify key features and areas for improvement. Through extensive research, I created a FigJam board outlining the onboarding flows and user experiences of various health-related apps and websites.

The Problem:

Wellen’s digital interfaces had already implemented a variety of engaging and helpful features, but inspiration from other competing fitness and wellness platforms on the market could help improve them even more. It needed a bit more enhancement, and figuring out how other companies advertise their programs could help Wellen a lot.

Goals:

As the designer, the goal I had for this project was to create an extensive yet easy to view and use layout of multiple fitness and wellness apps and websites. I wanted the Wellen team to be able to efficiently comprehend my notes and highlighted features, and take them into consideration for possible ideas to add.

Research:

Organization:

To begin, I was given a few apps/websites to analyze by Wellen, and in addition, I decided to research some other companies’ interfaces to add more. I created a list of companies to observe, and organized them by fitness and wellness(habit forming or social). With the help of a few established articles covering companies with these topics, I was able to make my list a little longer and include current competitors on the market.

Gathering and Analyzing Information:

For each of the fitness and wellness apps, I took screenshots of the onboarding flows and the website pages and connected them with arrows from button to page for the team to understand how to navigate through the site. I also played with every button, interaction point, and pop up on the page to see where they would take me, and if there were any hidden benefits that we might take inspiration from. I looked out not only for the positive features, but also the negative ones, and put notes on digital sticky notes to easily convey short and digestible pieces of information/findings to the rest of the team.

Results:

After I was finished documenting each of the websites and apps and took notes on the impactful features that the other competitors in the market were using, I gave it to the team for them to look through. The CEO and other designers on the team complimented my work and said that it has helped them a lot by getting an organized glance of the competition, and they said they used it for a long time even after I ended my time at Wellen. I am glad I was able to make an impact on the team and help out through this UX research project – I learned a lot about paying attention to detail and being organized through my work. Overall, I believe the work I compiled was a success, and was easy for the team to analyze.
